An event 150 years in the making

HCR 15, Concurrent Resolution Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Golden Spike, recognizes the incredible achievement – and historic significance – of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. The driving of the Golden Spike is largely recognized as the event marking Utah as the “crossroads of the west.”

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Golden Spike ceremony. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Scott Sandall, acknowledges the efforts of the people of Box Elder County and Utah, “many of whom have dedicated countless hours to the Golden Spike National Historic Site.” Lastly, the bill recognizes a ceremony being held in honor of the 150th anniversary on May 10, 2019. The Legislature and the governor further authorized, as part of the ceremony, the creation of a spike using native Utah copper, officially designated as the “Utah Spike.” The public is not only invited, but enthusiastically encouraged to attend the ceremony and, as some close to the bill have put it, “Party like it’s 1869!” The bill passed both the House and Senate, and was sent to the governor for his consideration.
