The Utah Senate Democrats released the following statement regarding the 2025 “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”:
“The Senate Democrats express our strong opposition to H.R. 1 and urge our federal delegation to vote against this resolution as it reaches the Senate. This bill includes proposals that would directly harm Utahns, including:
- Cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, which will have serious consequences for our working communities, especially Utah’s young, large families.
- A freeze on AI regulation for ten years, which impedes state sovereignty and limits Utah’s ability to lead on responsible innovation.
- The bill imposes federal penalties on how Utah administers its social services using state taxpayer dollars—a clear infringement on state rights.
- The elimination of energy tax credits that encourage clean energy use, which could raise utility costs, weaken domestic manufacturing, and undermine current U.S. investments.
- Increased fees for individuals seeking asylum or sponsoring unaccompanied children, which would complicate and burden an already strained immigration system.
- Reductions in federal investments that Utah depends on, paired with tax cuts for the highest earners, contribute to a growing federal deficit.
We believe this bill is reckless, regressive, and short-sighted. The many harmful facets of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act are anything but beautiful for working Utahns. We urge Senator Lee and Senator Curtis to stand with the people of Utah and reject this deeply flawed proposal.”
