Utah Senate Democrats Oppose H.B. 267, Public Sector Labor Union Amendments

February 6, 2025

SALT LAKE CITY—The Utah Senate Democrats released the following statement regarding H.B. 257, Public Sector Union Amendments

“We are deeply disappointed by the passing of H.B. 257, Public Sector Labor Union Amendments. This bill is nothing more than an attempt to eliminate labor unions and strip public employees of their ability to advocate at the local level for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the respect they deserve.

For the past week, thousands of workers—teachers, police officers, firefighters, and other public employees—have made their voices heard. Day after day, they attended committee hearings, sent emails, made phone calls, and met with legislators, all to express their overwhelming opposition to this bill. Ignoring their pleas is not just dismissive, it is undemocratic.

H.B. 267 does not solve any real problem faced by Utahns. Our state’s policies should reflect the needs of Utahns—not outside influences and national efforts to dismantle unions and undermine freedom of speech.

To our public sector workers, we will continue to advocate and fight for you and your families: we honor your service and commitment to our communities. We urge Governor Cox to veto this bill and stand with the workers who serve Utah with dedication and integrity.”
